To comment on ongoing discussions about artalley.social, sexual depictions of minors are absolutely not allowed here. Until now the guiding principle of this rule enforcement was physical appearance of characters rather than specific knowledge of various canons. If a character has the body of an adult, it is an adult, and if the character has the body of a minor, it is a minor, even if the canon claims it is a 500 year old dragon. (1/-)
Unfortunately whalefall did not include the receipts of our conversation in the post talking about our policies, summarizing it instead in more vague terms that made the situation look far more ominous than it was. In the end it is just one account in question and we didn't have a reason to review those policies previously. We have reached out to the elekk.xyz admin to try and clarify the situation, but it is very difficult to fix rumours once they start circulating. (2/-)
Attempt to contact elekk.xyz admins over e-mail was unsuccessful, so posting receipts here. Here is the original report we received (name of artist redacted), and a private exchange with whalefall. The comment mentions nazi imagery, but none could be found in the reported post, or in other posts at the time we checked the account (if a post that was reported was deleted, it would still appear on the report). Drawings did not seem to depict minors. (4/-)
Rosa is a Pokemon protagonist. As with all Pokemon main series protagonists, she is a minor in her canon. Her depiction in the reported art makes no effort to make her appear older than her canonical depiction. If it did, I could understand, but the artist just didn't even try to make her look older. Even taking into account art style.
I have attached her official artwork (by Yusuki Ohmura) for comparison.
@marysue @curator adult forms of characters should clearly be allowed. Using cannon ages is meaningless since most lolis are depicted with an age above 18.
There is plenty of disgusting art out there that actual look like children. Yet you're wasting your time on a depiction of a character that looks older than most japanese young adults.
@curator Heads-up that unless you've made some modifications to mastodon, "if a post that was reported was deleted, it would still appear on the report" is not guaranteed to be true. I have definitely experienced toots I've reported disappearing from within the report view (I'm a mod so I see that view).
@curator And some unsolicited advice: if you want to limit the damage done to artalley.social you would do well to talk about how things will be different going forward. I can tell you that weirder.earth is currently evaluating what to do about the situation, and I'm sure we're not the only ones. We don't want to suspend based on one incident, but if it's likely to be repeated we will.
What I would really recommend is building a moderator team; it's a lot to try to do alone.
@eldang One of the admins of elekk finally responded to our e-mail and if I understand it correctly, the "nazi imagery" in the report referred to one of the characters in the first picture in the post, who is said to be an original character of Shadman. How any of us were supposed to recognize an original character of Shadman though...
@curator No-one can be expected to know all references upfront (this is another reason I advocate for group moderation - less likely to miss things like this), but it's also a question of how you respond once attention is called to it.
Art Alley is a Mastodon server for artists and commissioners, as well as people who just like looking at art. Share your finished pieces, works in progress, changes to your commissions status and your livestreams, or whatever else you want, really!
